Laurel Seaborn

Captain Laurel Seaborn grew up aboard a Herreshoff-design ketch on the Salish Sea, and soon realized that few heroines of sailing existed in the formal history books. After many years on boats, she holds not only a US Coast Guard 100-ton master’s license but is also a master diver, with a master’s degree in maritime archaeology. While working on tall ships such as the brig "Lady Washington," and the schooner "America," Laurel gained a deeper appreciation of maritime heritage. She went on to study underwater archaeology, which included excavations of the pirate Blackbeard’s "Queen Anne’s Revenge" in Beaufort, North Carolina and recording of the museum ship "VASA" in Stockholm, Sweden. Currently, she works as an archaeology professor for hands-on fieldwork through her non-profit organization, Seafaring Education and Maritime Archaeological Heritage Programs (SEAMAHP.org), and as an ASA sailing instructor on the warm waters of Florida. Though happy imparting knowledge of marlinspike seamanship, and telling sailors’ yarns, she loves sharing her current research on the history of the seafaring women who came before her.
