Sumartin Shipyard: a day in the life

This traditional Croatian shipyard has been in existence for over 100 years. For several of those years it was a wood boat building school operated by the Yugoslav government. Several Croatian American shipbuilders were trained at this facility; many of which brought their knowledge and stills to Tacoma and Gig Harbor where successful ship building operations were developed.

Today, the Sumartin Shipyard is one of the very few traditional boatyards in operation. Their customers are fisherman and tourism boat operators; all of which own large wooden work boats (25 to 35 meters) that require both annual maintenance and major refits.

The presentation would involve showing both still photos and video clips, with in-depth interpretation provided by Mike Vlahovich. Time would be allowed for comments, dialogue and questions between the presenter and the audience. This presentation would also include some storytelling based on Mike’s lifetime experiences as a shipwright in the US and in Croatia.
